It is Zuko’s 27th birthday and the two main girls in Zuko’s life, Mai and Ty Lee want to make sure it is a memorable one. Azula has redeemed herself and has made herself an invaluable asset to Zuko’s regime, as well as an indispensable part of Ty Lee’s and Mai’s professional lives, but Azula is longing for the closeness she once had with her brother and former friends. Mai knows that Zuko has long held feelings for Azula and that the same is true for Azula. So Mai, with Zuko’s and Ty Lee’s blessing, orders Azula to join them in Zuko’s chamber to see if she has really changed….and maybe because Mai and Ty Lee miss having Azula's companionship inside and outside the bedroom.

The war has changed. In the days of Sozin and his daughter, Fire Lord Kazue, the Fire Nation fought with armies and warships and brought the world to its knees. But Kazue saw that the war was unsustainable. That they were going to lose. So she taught her son peace. She showed her firstborn Azulon how to reach a stalemate, how to end the war without letting anyone know they had lost. This is your legacy, she promised him: remaining a global power without shedding any more blood.
Fire Lord Azulon cooled down the war, but people still fight. The world is no longer a warzone, a multicultural city has sprung up on Fire Nation conquered lands they've ostensibly given back to the Earth Kingdom. The Four Nations live in peace, but a charged wind blows throughout the world. Everyone with a nose can smell sulfur, can tell the half-brokered peace is a powder keg. This world is unsustainable, something will set it alight
The war has changed. It's traded armies for intelligence; small groups of highly skilled individuals fight for their Nation in the shadows. People like Sokka and Suki, who are about to rip the Fire Nation a new one and trick these sons-a-bitches into giving up all their intel.

Aang refused to let Katara go and couldn’t enter the Avatar state in the battle for the Earth Kingdom at the end of Book Two, leading to disastrous results. With the Avatar gone and Katara held prisoner, how will she ever find her way back to her people, let alone find a way to defeat the Fire Lord? Gathering her strength and her allies, she launches herself into an adventure that takes her across the world with the intent of toppling the Fire Lord's empire once and for all. For his part, Zuko must reckon with his betrayal of his uncle at Ba Sing Se and come to terms with turning against his father and his family if he is truly to become the man he wants to be.

Summary
After Zuko's Agni Kai with Ozai and he learns of his banishment, Zuko flees the Fire Nation afraid, confused, and alone, leaving his uncle behind who has a chance to grow close to Azula. Zuko understands much sooner that his father never loved him and finds himself in an Earth Kingdoms forest surrounded by boys who want to free their kingdom from the Fire Nation. Zuko joins the Freedom Fighters claiming to be a nonbender from the Earth Kingdoms, growing in confidence in himself. When it is reveled that he is a firebenders, Jet is forced to understand not all members of the Fire Nation are war mongers and both boys are significantly less angsty when the Gaang shows up. The Gaang inadvertently kidnap Zuko in a misunderstanding of the situation to be Aang's firebending teacher, altering his and the Gaang's path.

He’s not explicitly invited to the Agni Kai, but no one attempts to hide it from him—though in retrospect, long after, once he finally has time to process, this fact will strike him as odd. Wouldn’t someone have expected him to protest, had he known? But then only Azula knew the depths of his ambivalence in Ba Sing Se, and had apparently elected to keep it hidden in her sleeves like so many of her plots, no doubt to brandish as a secret weapon should the need present itself.
Azula steadily moves her gaze to the platform in the center of the arena, and when Zuko follows it there, his hand finds the branded skin on his face, stomach tumbling out from within him, blood flushing like he imagines it would if the sun were to disappear from the sky.
He cries out, leaping to his feet. “What’d they do to him?!”

How Hakoda pulled the Fire Nation Prince out of the ocean when he was 13.
Zuko is fresh into his banishment and he travels with Hakoda and his Tribe for a year before returning to his Uncle.
The Gaang hears the story and they become conflicted about their opinions of Zuko. Time passes to that fateful day in Ba Sin Se. Katara is in the catacombs with Zuko, using the knowledge she learned about Zuko from Bato she connects with him on a deeper level.
He makes a different choice because of it, which results in him joining the Gaang early.

Zuko had decided early on in life that parenthood was not for him. Besides the fact that he was a raging homosexual who had no plans on settling down with the expected demure wife with 2.5 children and white picket fence, he just didn’t see the point for him to procreate. He never asked to be born, and he figured he shouldn’t place that imposition on another human.
Sokka may have changed things.
Zuko’s feelings on parenthood from college, to dating, to engaged, to married, to realizing he should have never doubted himself
Can be read as a stand-alone, but more fun with the rest of the series!
