    Summary

"...At that point in time, there was not much there to remind people of the man who had, so long ago, initiated the construction of this building, according to plans he had drawn up himself. A man with a vision, and the burning ambition to put it into action, and establish the very first cotton mill on the European continent."

All fiction aside, this is the true story of John Thornton, the man who inspired the character in Elisabeth Gaskell's North and South.

    Summary

"It is not simply that I dislike him! It is that I have seldomly met anyone I liked less!"

When one careless act sets off a chain of unexpected events, Margaret Hale is forced into a marriage with John Thornton, the very man whom she despises most of all. However, the brooding mill owner entertains some feelings of his own on the matter, and might not quite be the man she has taken him for.

    Summary

Modern AU. Margaret Hale finds herself in need of a fake boyfriend for her cousin’s destination wedding and it seems that only one man is up to the task. The only problem is she hates John Thornton and he hates her. ( A fake dating trope for N&S because why not? This story world needed one. Crossposted on ff ) Playlist here ->

    Summary

Miss Simmons, aged 22, wants what any sensible young lady wants: a laboratory where she can study the stages of decay, a subscription to a circulating academic library, and for her parents to stop making difficulties about that misunderstanding with the livers. When her father announces that he’s moving the family far away from their home in Cambridge, she fears that her already slim chances of contributing to scientific progress will vanish forever. Perhaps, however, the cosmos has something rather different in mind.

This fanfic story begins a few pages from the end of Elizabeth Gaskell's North and South where Thornton attends Harley Street for a meeting with Henry Lennox and Margaret. Unlike the book, Henry Lennox does attend the meeting.

In order to regain his ancestral home of Marlbor, the Lonely Mill, Thornton Oakenshield must obtain the coveted Margarenstone and defeat Smog, the evil dragon of despair before it claims his soul. A crossover parody of North & South and The Hobbit. I have to credit J. R. R. Tolkien, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Elizabeth Gaskell, and Sandy Welch (their words in italics).

    Summary

When a new maid arrives at the Thornton household, Mrs. Thornton takes little notice. However, Sibeal's beauty and intelligence ignite an interest in Mrs Thornton that quickly becomes a flame.

*I firmly believe that Mrs Thornton is a lesbian, I don't know why, but she has really gay energy lol. Maybe it's that she never remarried, even though marriage might have helped pull them out of poverty sooner? This is an interpretation of how this would look, if she came to realise/accept this part of herself, with the added difficulty of class difference, culture and status. Also, this is definitely a work in progress, so... I guess I'll edit later?

This is an attempt at a happier ending to the Great Exhibition scene between John & Margaret. This combines text (in italics) from Sandy Welch's amazing BBC script and Elizabeth Gaskell's wonderful book (neither of which do I own). Reviews and comments are welcome.

    Summary

A retelling of Gaskell's classic. Saudade- a nostalgic longing for someone or something that was loved and then lost, with the knowledge that it might possibly never return, aka a love that remains.

Margaret Hale returns to Helstone to live a peaceful life but instead has to move to the smoky town of Milton. An encounter with the nouveau-riche, hardened mill master John Thornton with traumas of his own lead to conflicting opinions, intensified by a growing attraction between the two.

    Summary

In this crossover of classical literature featuring North&South, Pride&Prejudice and Jane Eyre, John Thornton is horrified to discover his drawing room is plagued by the female antagonists of these iconic novels. Irritated, he is forced to listen to the three silliest women in England wag their acid tongues, but the mood soon turns dark when they begin to pick on a certain young lady, of whom he is very fond indeed.
