“Lost.” Lan Wangji muttered as his ears began heating up again. Pets were unnecessary. They were symbols of wealth, but also pleasure and excess. He was perfectly content to stay away from people who were bought exclusively to be dressed up and debauched to enhance another person’s status, no matter how socially acceptable it was deemed. Neither his uncle nor brother had a pet, and he doubted they would pressure him into having one. If the most he ever saw of what pets did was glimpses of the fancy clothing they wore, he would be happy.

Lan Wangji does gain more experience with pets, not due to purchasing one, but because he becomes one after the Gusu Lan Empire comes crashing down at the hands of rebels.

There is an austere cottage in the back hills of Cloud Recesses set apart from the rest of the residences and halls, surrounded by bamboo groves. Most of the time, it is unoccupied. Very occasionally, a Lan disciple who commits a moderate offence might be sent there for some days of silent reflection.
It now plays host to someone who is not permitted to step outside, the doors sealed shut with Lan Xichen's own qi.
Shuoyue doesn't strike a killing blow. Lan Xichen comes to understand his father.

Jingyi did something, that in retrospect, was incredibly stupid. But it wouldn’t be the first time, would be far from the last.
He downed his entire drink at once, then bolted up from the couch.
“Whoa.” Jingyi blinked. He wasn’t drunk, but he was probably tipsy. “Be right back,” he said, heading toward the bar.
And the gods were smiling down on him because the most beautiful man Jingyi had ever seen in his entire life started walking his way. Jingyi halted and just stared. He knew it was bold, maybe even bordering on rude.
He didn’t care.
The man must’ve noticed him staring because he turned to him and the second their eyes met Jingyi’s mind completely went offline. Like full on Windows shut-down noise. He froze, his mouth dropping open like some sort of idiot.
But the man just lifted a brow, lifted one side of his mouth in—well, not a smile, exactly. But something. Something that made Jingyi’s body buzz. There were sparks, the earth moved, every stupid cliché Jingyi had ever heard or read in his short life raced through his head.
He was in love. Or at least in lust. -
