Summary
Herald John shena Tale'sedrin is the King's Own, the highest Herald in Valdemar, but it all means nothing when his King is killed in a senseless accident. John sets out on a journey of self-discovery very damn reluctantly, leaving Rolan behind. He is more running away than running to, and it's his good fortune that he meets one Harold Finch. Harold is one of the famous horse-loving Ashkevrons. Unfortunately, he dislikes horses, and he's been on a self-imposed guilt trip for years. When he spots John on the road, he can't find it in himself to leave him behind, and John goes with him, but only until he can disappear into the mountains. That's his plan, but John has a few surprises in store. This is Valdemar, and that means chance and fate are all part of John's destiny.

本文完成于2012年5月，主要灵感来自于POI S01E18，最初的构思是：Finch在摄入致幻剂之后说了一些让Reese起疑心的话，Reese的态度又让Finch以为他在意的是“晚安”那句，两人在各揣不信任的情况下遇到了一个新的案件……在构思的同时幻想了一下如果两位主演的其它角色进入POI剧情的可能性，于是另外增加两条故事线，分别代表两人的潜意识，可以看作是三个平行空间的故事。1.文中部分情节设定改编自剧集《囚徒》（The Prisoner）和《迷失》（LOST）。
2.部分场景设定模仿了刘慈欣先生的小说《黑暗森林》。
3.文中涉及到的宗教仪式和其它组织的描写仅凭本人有限的记忆和网上收集，凡不准确之处绝非故意冒犯。

Someone was forcing John to do things here, thought Harold. They had leverage on him. So if John didn’t do what he was doing right now, something worse would happen.
And this wasn’t just locking the two of them in a room and ordering them to have sex. That, in and of itself, was rape, but this? This was meant to feel like rape… with John in the role of the rapist.

This started out as a short story in response to the lack of respect John Reese's ultimate sacrifice was given in Return 0. We never saw any of Team Machine show grief. We saw happy Finch with Grace and it killed me to see Shaw & Fusco smiling & having coffee. Reese was barely mentioned. We as fans were not given a chance to grieve......with the characters or with each other. SO I wrote my own ending. But then it took on a life of its own.......complete with untold backstories that I always wanted. Writing this was very cathartic for me, helping me deal with the loss of Reese and the show itself. Shared grief always helps. I hope it helps you also.

"You know, I was going to go with you anyway." Mark complained as he limped up the stairs to the roof.
With his left arm, he braced himself against the stairwell's handrail. Reese supported him on his right. Behind them was a trail of blood from Mark's brand new bullet wound.
"You should be thanking me, Mark. I could've shot you in the knees. I'm good at that."
Mark huffed out a laugh, which turned into a groan as he put weight on his wounded leg. The bullet had gone clean through, not hitting bone or his femoral artery. Mark supposed that John was right about his knees, but it didn't really matter. They were both already dead, the countdown on their chests approaching the 10 minute mark. It had been nice of Kara to give them enough time to really absorb the fact that they were about to die.
Cold air hit Mark in the face as Reese let him go in order to open the door. Mark followed him out
'It's not the worst way to go,' Mark thought.
