Summary
Once upon a time three aliens kids left their pods in the mountain and hand in hand they walked down the road. In a nice world the three kids are picked up by a nice person who takes them to the proper authorities where they are taken care of.
In this world three kids were picked up by a man who took them for his own. He fed them, he gave them clothes and he took care of them. They learnt to address him as Taker, while they got the names Max, Isobel and Michael.
Taker taught them the difference between right and wrong. But what most people see as right or wrong was not what Taker saw. Instead they learned the grayscales, what makes a bad human bad, and a good human slightly less bad. They learned that everyone has secrets and the good man can always turn into a bad one, by force, necessity or choice.
They learned how to lie, they learned how to steal. And they learned how to kill. But most importantly they learned how to blend in. To live their life as humans. To never be suspected, to never be caught.
This is the story of the Guerin triplets.

While Michael and Liz try to save Max, Alex and Maria take care of Michael.
Michael doesn't know if they talked to each other later, made some agreement but it feels like they did. He only knows that they never come by at the same time, not at first, not until they do. And in the times they're around each other, they're easy in each other's company. Playful, gentle. Only a little edge of bitterness adding sting to their banter.

It’s Saturday morning and Kyle’s been up since 5:30. He’d like to say he did it on purpose, because waking up early with the express intent of going on a run and completing other various errands on a Saturday morning is responsible. Adult-like. A totally normal thing that other late-twenty-somethings do on their weekends.
Waking up early because it’s been a shitty night of restless, anxiety-induced sleeplessness, so you might as well get up anyways, especially when that lack of sleep is caused by romantic problems? Not very responsible or adult-y. And he doesn’t think the specific romantic troubles he’s having are ones most other late-twenty-somethings have to deal with either.

Mimi DeLuca doesn’t have time for another kid, or the resources. She tells herself that as she watches Jim Valenti question an eleven-year-old wrapped tightly in a blanket, a nurse clearing the burns on the kid’s forearm. She presses her lips together and stands with Ann Evans as she listens to the story spilling out of the boy in monosyllable answers to Jim’s questions. Had the people at the foster home done this to him? Yes. Had he run away because of that? Yes. Did he know where he was going when he ran away? No – Yes – To his siblings. Did he want to go back? Not ever.

He’s idly considering if Maria’s psychic abilities are rubbing off on him when Max finally lets out a long breath and says, “Can I ask you something?” His eyes flick over to Michael and away just as fast.
Michael wants to shake him in frustration, but he just shrugs and says, “Sure.” Max opens his mouth but nothing comes out. Michael scoots down in his chair and closes his eyes. “Whenever you’re ready, dude.” He starts counting his breaths to pass the time, and just to see how long it will take.
On exhale forty-five Max finally blurts, “How did you know you were bi?”
Michael’s eyes pop open and the rest of his breath rushes out. He sits halfway up, arms braced on the edge of the chair. “What?”
