It happens sometimes— he’s seen it before— the way they get caught in loops, walking through motions that remind him they were human once. That to a less hardened person might invoke some kind of sympathy. Sympathy will only get you killed these days. Still, Shane hates when it's kids. At least none of them seem new enough to be Screechers. He can’t fucking stand Screechers. They’re significantly faster and stronger, bodies more animated in their relentless quest for something with fresh blood and a heartbeat.
“Fuck,” he grits out between clenched teeth before reaching to unholster his weapon. The nails at the tip of the bat are rusted from wear and the numerous bodily fluids it’s come into contact with but it regularly gets the job done. His fingers wrap familiarly around the grip tape and he’s contemplating the best place to start cleaning up when an ear piercing shriek reverberates through the still air. It’s coming from the direction of the house Sara and Ryan are currently scavenging. “God fucking damn it!”

Enter Sam and Dean, a haunted hotel, some mysterious disappearances, and a demon with a nasty habit of eviscerating people.
Suddenly, normalcy has gone out the window, which drags Shane and Ryan into the Winchesters' family business. And, as many people have found out the hard way, connections to the Winchesters aren't exactly good luck.

Even before Ryan asked him to join, there had always been a little something there. But now that Shane saw Ryan more than he's seen anyone else in the past, like, four years, it was getting harder and harder to focus.
What was nice, though, was that he could make Ryan laugh and make Ryan feel safe. And if that's all he could ever do for Ryan, he would take it. Because there's no way in hell Ryan would keep him around if he knew.
But his job was fun. He got paid. He lived a pretty good life. He could only really complain about one thing, and he, after all these years, still didn't think he deserved to.
