Summary
“Just tell me you’re happy, Margaret, just tell me that and I’ll go away. I will take all the memories I have of you and put them in a box with a pretty bow and lock it in my heart. Take it out for Christmas and birthdays. Tell me you’re happy. That’s all I want.”
To come home. To pick up your life where you left off or form a new one on your own terms.
You didn’t expect how temporary everything would feel, how you would be afraid of getting attached. You didn’t expect the feeling of being caught in a maelstrom, or that the flame you always carried within would start to flutter and die. After Korea, Hawkeye and Margaret are trying to get on with their lives. Apart from each other and apart from the people they came to think of as family. Trying to find their place in a world where nothing seems familiar anymore. It’s hard. Exhausting. And neither of them can forget that thing between them. The thing that clicked, kept shifting and grew strong.
The thing that holds. -

Summary
“Shoulders like this.” Hawkeye spreads his arms. “Mine has no tattoos, but his biceps are still nothing to scoff at when he flexes. A cute ass.” He grins, and Margaret can tell just by the faraway momentary look in his eyes that his infatuation is genuine. Her interest is piqued more and more.
“I know you wouldn’t love someone just for their physique,” Margaret says.
He casts her a look. “Wouldn’t I?”
Her moment of doubt is fleeting. Margaret smiles. “No. You have too much heart and romance for that.”

Summary
Hawkeye makes it exactly two steps into the street before the car hits him. It’s a duller sound than he’d imagined; for some reason he had thought it would sound like the wet crack of a bullet or the hiss of a shell. He hears voices, sees the outlines of people around him and the glitter of broken gin bottles, smells the sharp tang of blood and alcohol.. He cranes his neck to look across the street: his cat is gone.
“Goddammit,” he whispers as everything goes dark and--Someone’s knocking at the door. Water drips down Hawkeye’s face and into the basin of the sink. The knock comes again. “Yeah,” he calls as he wipes his face off.

Summary
TRAP: Oliver’s gone, Hawk. Got his orders and got out. He got a better deal than the rest of us; in my opinion, we might as well take advantage of the extra space. But if you wanna respect his old bunk like some kind of shrine for a while, you don’t gotta go yelling “fire” at me.
HAWK: I didn’t yell fire. (He keeps an eye on the fire, to see if it’s spreading.)
TRAP (pouring a drink from the still): Well, you certainly didn’t whisper it.
HAWK: But I didn’t yell it. (looking at the audience) Wouldn’t be kosher, in a theater.
TRAP: What the hell are you talking about?
HAWK (still addressing the audience): Although it’s not technically illegal. Still, probably best to avoid it.
TRAP: I can’t have you cracking up on me now, Hawk. Especially now that Oliver’s out of here. You’re just about the last person in this camp I can stand.

Summary
It’s nearing five a.m., and Hawkeye and Margaret are standing in her kitchen, two stories up off the ground. Hawkeye can feel it, somehow, that they’re way off street level. Like they’re floating in their own little bubble. Margaret is running all around the kitchen just like she used to run around the O.R. whenever they had a particularly busy night with wounded, and she’s got that same intense look on her face that Hawkeye recognizes from back then. Only this time, there’s no emergency. This time, she’s just trying to juggle making a pot of coffee, toasting eight pieces of bread, and frying up sixteen eggs for the remaining guests at the party. Hawkeye leans in the doorway a moment, just watching her.
“I could marry you, Margaret,” he says, finally altering her to his presence. “Did you know that?”
Startled, she looks up, then immediately makes a face at him. “If you’re going to come into my kitchen and make cracks at me, you may as well do something useful, you know. Take over the eggs.” She walks over to where he is and hands him the spatula she’s holding, then takes the kettle off the stove just as it starts to boil, readying the coffee.

Summary
Somehow, amid the gore and death, the sweltering summers and frostbitten winters, she’d found them. Her family had sprouted up, between the sniper bullets and cockroach races, comprised of the most brokenly human people she’d ever met. They had to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but they’d do it together.

Summary
The waves lap gently against the boards of the pier as you take a long drag on your cigarette, the glowing end burning red through the darkness. You’re silhouetted in the fractured light of the moon, the beach in front of you smudged in shadows of charcoal grey, the pier beneath your feet doused in an inky, forbidding black. There’s not a soul around except for you, the only noises being the crash of the waves and the ragged breaths rattling out of your chest.
