There had been a change. It struck Yuki as he woke, at such an early hour that his room was still tinged blue from dawn, to a house still bereft of the morning noises he had gotten so used to that it still felt disorienting to not hear them. He woke early, first to a dry mouth, and then to a sense of dread sitting disquieted in his chest. And then, he had a thought:
There would always, always be more things to hide behind.
At first he had tried to go back to sleep, but instead of the words washing down to nothing but a tired and intrusive thought, they rattled in him. Scurrying under his bones, becoming so pervasive that he finally had no choice but to twist himself out of bed and attempt to walk it off instead.
He paced his bedroom. He went downstairs for water. He slid open one of the doors to stand on the engawa, still cool from dew, and tried to let the quiet of the morning settle him again. The gentle weight of early summer eked through the early hour and pressed to him, like hands cradling his jaw.
It all only served to wake him up further and have him think again, with a new clarity and urgency, that he needed to talk to Kakeru.

Yuki, a high-ranking member of the Sohma family syndicate, figures the job will be simple. It's not until he meets the assignment's subjects, reserved shopkeep Machi Kuragi and her over-friendly associate, Kakeru Manabe, that he struggles to complete the task as planned. In a turn of events that leaves him strung between the trust of his family and the trust of his new acquaintances, Yuki must make a decision: to stay loyal to the Sohmas, or pursue his wish to leave the family business once and for all.

“You? Why would you go? You have the social skills of a taxidermied cat,” Yuki scoffed. “If she wants to get through dealing with people, I’m the better choice. At least I have manners.”
“It’s in June! Of course I’m going with her. That’s allergy season, you asthmatic rat. What are you gonna do, wheeze at her family? Besides,” Kyo turned to Tohru, “if I’m not there, who will stop you from tripping in whatever ridiculous dress and heels your cousin picks out? Yuki will be useless, it’s allergy season for crying out loud!”

Kakeru sighed, and squirmed again to shift his position so that he, too, sat sideways on the couch, half pigeon-posed and as close to Yuki as he could manage. He leaned an arm across Yuki’s knees, elbow and wrist to each cap, and said,
“So?”
“So, what?”
“Tell me what’s up so that we can watch a movie? And eat snacks while we talk about how cool it is?”
“Only you talk about how cool they are.
“Yeah, but I know you agree with everything I say in the deepest corners of your heart.”
Yuki scoffed briefly at that with a small smile tugging at a corner of his mouth, but as he shook his head the expression left him. Kakeru, in a rare moment of patience, waited for him to speak.

“Are you asleep now?”
The silence catches Kakeru’s question and the breathing of those sleeping. After all the flurry from everybody of intoxication and final-trip banter, it had dwindled and quietened to the two talking, and a gradual end to it all with Kakeru’s question. Are you asleep now?
He tries to see through the thick dark, his eyes only adjusting to what the moon’s glow touches. The glow filters through the blinds and glazes the bottom half of Yuki’s face, and Kakeru sees only his askew mouth and strings of moon-tinged hair fall against the pillow.
For a moment, he wants to tell Yuki something. His mouth opens but the words are absent. Instead, the back of his head drops against his pillow and he stares into the black of the ceiling.
