Her mother loved her with the teeth of a comb, gliding through Mai’s damp hair as she hummed an unattainable lullabye. No words, just the vibration of a tired voice and rhythmic motion. As a younger child, Mai found comfort in sinking down into her mother’s contentment, wrapped tight in that simple gesture, suffering through harsher tugs and tangles for the feeling of care. It’s the last that sticks the longest and so it stays. Wood rot. Woodrot. Woodrott. The wooden piles that hold its pier together had long ago turned gray, their splitting grooves riddled with the warts of barnacles. The village of tin shanties bears the soul of an old man. Sensible, for old men born here tend to die here, wind-dried or pickled, and so it is fitting that the air smells of salt and vinegar and neglected things.
To Jee it smells like home.

Zuko realizes his destiny much earlier. As in, as soon as he wakes up in the palace after his Agni Kai and is told he is banished. Unfortunately, he's never been a patient one. So he storms right up to Ozai and tells him what he's going to do. And gets locked up for over three years. Then, one day, he's being pulled out and told he's the new Fire Lord.
A "Zuko never meets the Gaang and suddenly becomes Fire Lord after three years of literal torture" AU. In which the Gaang doesn't know what to think of the new Fire Lord who happens to be the missing nephew of Aang's firebending teacher, Iroh constantly has a headache, and, sure, maybe the world hates the Fire Nation, but the Fire Nation LOVES Zuko, and he can work with that.

Set ten years after the war ended and Zuko is a grieving husband with a young child to comfort. Not barely ten months after the loss of his best friend who incidently was his wife, a new organisation has risen that seems to be out for blood.
He's trying to juggle being a good Father, struggling to squash a terrorist cell, fighting with his Councillors and making sure he looks after himself properly. He feels like he's not doing any of it very well. His staff are really worried about him.
But then a familiar face drops by and things start to look up.Edit: I'm picking up where I left off and giving them a long overdue honeymoon!
