3 Works in Les Huguenots - Meyerbeer/Deschamps & Scribe

This is the AU where a) it's modern and b) Valentine survives the first night of the massacre, albeit in critical condition and initially unresponsive. Somehow it ends worse than the original. I just...kinda had the idea for this, I guess? And then I thought about it a lot and here we are. Apologies for any inaccuracies of any sort.
I suck at titles so eventually I just kinda gave up and went with a paraphrase of a line from Marguérite's aria "O beau pays de la Touraine": Et que la foudre ou l’orage jusqu’à moi ne puisse arriver!" ("And may neither lightning nor storm be able to come close to me!")
M, I'm gifting this to you even though it will almost certainly make you cry because you love this opera too.

‘Get in. We’re going on a road trip.’
‘Where are we going?’
‘Nowhere in particular.’
This is a modern AU for Les Huguenots in which Marguerite revs up an antique car and takes Valentine on a fast-paced drive around the countryside in Touraine one glorious summer day. They laugh, sing, act crazy, and maybe even admit something very big to each other...
Inspired by anderswasright’s response to an ask I sent about who in this opera would be most likely to sing Journey songs in the car. As a result, this is a very special gift for anderswasright, but this is also for everyone else who wants to read this and (I hope) enjoy!

Carlos receives an anonymous note to go to the laurel trees in one of the palace gardens at midnight. He thinks it's from Elisabetta, but it's not. It's not from Eboli either, or even Rodrigo. It's someone he's never met before.
Inspired by a long conversation I had with anderswasright on Tumblr.
