He’s heard stories about those unlucky people whose marks never come in, and he’s even heard a few stories about people who never connected with their soulmate despite being marked, but the Bittles and Phelpses have never suffered that fate. Until he came along. Eric Bittle doesn't have a soulmark, but that hasn't stopped him from longing for his soulmate.
Jack Zimmermann has never thought too much about soulmates, even when it was still a possibility for him. He’s not like Bitty, still holding out hope a mark will materialize, proving there’s someone out there just for him. He’s twenty-four. It’s not going to happen.
When Jack signs with the Falconers, pretending to be soulmates seems like an easy solution for both of them. After all, neither of them really wants to be alone.

Kent goes first overall in the draft. Jack goes to Samwell. As far as Jack's concerned, the split should cement the permanent end of the infamous Parson-Zimmermann hockey duo.
But then Kent keeps showing up at Samwell to rub his success in Jack's face. And he keeps on winning over Jack's friends so that they all feel sorry for him. And then he gets engaged to the captain of the Bruins, so Jack constantly has to glimpse snippets of their dates on the evening news or in the Boston newspaper.
It's all a scheme to make Jack jealous, of course. What else could it be?
