Lan Huan.exe has stopped working.
Or: Nie Huaisang has had enough of Meng Yao causing his brother undue discomfort with that voodoo doll of his, so he enlists Lan Huan's help in destroying it. And, well, when your crush asks you to do something, you can't just say no, can you? Unfortunately for him, all that's in store is more suffering. And salad. A whole lot of salad.

Summary
After the catastrophic events of Guanyin temple, there are good days and there are bad days.
On good days Jiang Cheng can go about his duties as normal, training his disciples and protecting his sect and it's people from those who would do them harm.
On bad days he wouldn't be able to get out of bed, staring hollowly at the ceiling in a way that reminded him too much of the period of time between waking up only to feel nothing in place of his golden core, confirming that his time in the hands of Wen Chao and his lackeys was not a dream- and the swell of hope when Wei Wuxian told him about a way to develop a new core.
On his bad days, his head disciple, Jiang Zhen, would assume the duties of the sect leader until he was well enough to return and the rest of his sect would pray endlessly for their beloved sect leader to heal.
Or when Jiang Cheng doesn't realize how badly he's doing until he's carted off to Cloud Recesses and finds healing alongside Lan Xichen who's not doing so hot either.

Wherein Jiang Cheng finds that Lan Xichen is not doing well in seclusion while on a trip to the Cloud Recesses to discuss some developments and the carelessness of the Gusu Lan's elders and his own protective streak has the Jiang Set Leader monitoring Lan Xichen's condition himself. But as time goes on and the two get closer they realize their feelings are not as cut and dry as they may seem.

Silence emanates throughout the whole temple as the scene sets into the minds of the two people present. It takes a bit, true, but the eventual consensus is undeniable. “You killed him,” Jin Ling says. “Like, you just…sliced his head right off.”
“It was an accident!” Lan Xichen protests, waving his sword helplessly at Jin Guangyao’s (decapitated) body.
Or: Due to Wei Wuxian's failure to notice Jin Ling entering the Guanyin Temple, Lan Xichen panics and accidentally kills Jin Guangyao. Cue repressed rage and a whole lot of revelations.

“Well, seeing as I’ve never been pregnant, I can’t say for sure,” Lan Xichen says, amusement alight in his voice, “but many mothers seem to think it is. Don’t mothers love their children?”
“Not all of them,” Nie Huaisang points out. “Some of them despise their children.” It’s a painful truth, but it is a truth. Birthing a child doesn’t mean automatically loving it. “But most do love them.” He supposes that, under the right conditions, love is almost guaranteed for a parent.
“Then I guess it’s worth it,” Lan Xichen decides.
Nie Huaisang tries his best to not make a face.
Or: Lan Xichen wants children. Nie Huaisang doesn't. They talk.
