Summary
After saving Conan from an encounter with the Black Organization, KID is captured and tortured by them for information on Pandora. After a few years in their captivity, he escapes only to find himself alone and navigating a world he no longer knows. He's hurt, traumatized, and trying to find any excuse or reason to stay alive. He stakes his whole existence on finding and destroying Pandora.
Shortly after being saved by KID, Shinichi gets his body back and tries to reintegrate himself back into society by finishing up high school and starting a full-time job at Tokyo PD. After picking up a strange case involving the supposedly dead phantom thief, Shinichi finds himself torn between arresting the thief and saving the thief from himself.
This is a story of healing from trauma and finding love while also taking down a major crime organization.

When they open their eyes, they're staring back at themselves. Now Shinichi has to find a way to get them back in their normal bodies before Kaito starts shrinking.
Note: This takes place in the canon universe, not the movies, so Kaito doesn't know Shinichi is Conan. -

When Kuroba Chikage called Shinichi Kudo, he was to investigate the disappearances at the Kuroba's summer home, a castle that Toichi Kuroba had bought shortly after Chikage and he had married. The detective fully expected it to be a normal murder case. He expected someone to confine themselves to a small portion of the castle. To pick off the construction workers one by one. What he did not expect as he and the two remaining Kurobas arrived on the property, was three servants of the castle to welcome them upon arrival. To bow gracefully and welcome them with smiles on their faces. Over the next six days, tragedy would befall Shinichi. Unbelievable events would unfold that none of them could explain to the police. They couldn't speak of it to anyone besides close family. If even they would believe them. The one thing that Shinichi could be thankful for though, was the way it had brought the Magician and Detective together in a way that nothing else ever would.

Hearing that one of the greatest detectives alive might be curious about justice outside the law, and realising he’s too old to play the role of Kaitou Kid, Jii contacts Shinichi and asks him to help find Touichi’s killers. With his convictions of indestructibility, Shinichi is drawn in by the idea of fighting for justice directly, and soon finds himself taking up the mantle of Kaitou Kid.
