Hangman was practically giddy with how stumped Rooster was. His smirk widened until it was beginning to look sharp around the edges. He twirled the toothpick between his teeth before purring, “My, my, my, Bradshaw. What kind of guy do you take me for? I’ll have you know that I would never cheat at chess. I don’t even know how!”

"Mitchell men aren't known for giving their hearts away," Maverick told him once. "Their love is too much for other people, so they have to hold onto it."
Bradley's not sure which he's meant to be. Born to be the son of one and raised to be the other. So instead he decides he doesn't need his heart anyway. Love isn't what fighter pilots are made of, certainly not the kind of love he had inside of him.
He locks his heart away so it can't hurt him. Unfortunately the most infuriating person he's ever met in his life seems to have found the key.

Their first meeting doesn't exactly go well. Bob thinks Hangman is a douche and Hangman thinks Bob is a nerd. An unpleasant encounter with Bob's former pilot might set another perspective.
“Well, well, well. If this isn’t Bob ‘Faggot’ Floyd.”
Bob’s heart is beating fast and while the blood rises to his cheeks, he wishes for the ground to open up and swallow him whole. Hangman gives him an incredulous and astonished look. Of all people it has to be him to witness this situation!
“Are you assigned to fly with him?”, Slayer asks, but doesn’t even wait for an answer. “I’ll give you a warning. You should stay away from him or Bob here will surely try to get into your pants.”
“And who wouldn’t? I mean, look at me. Everybody wants a piece of the Hangman. Really can’t blame him for that.”
Bob’s head shots back up, his mouth stands open and he really can’t believe Hangman said that. The pilot is leaning against the counter and seems absolutely relaxed, clearly enjoying himself. He smiles and the mischief in his grey eyes makes him look annoyingly sexy.

They got their asses kicked by their instructor, who Hangman (oh so conveniently) dragged out of the Hard Deck the day before being introduced, as they prepared for their new mission that brought “the best of the best” back to Top Gun.
