Summary
Holden Ford has come into town to speak with Notorious Serial Killer Merle Dixon, a chance (but eventual) meeting with his younger brother and the husband of police officer Rick Grimes changes Holden's tactics for asking Merle his coming questions.
Holden comes to find that even after years of hell Daryl still cares about his brother, Holden must use this information and the case file to dig into Merle Dixon's thoughts and feelings surrounding his childhood and the murders he committed.

The younger agent tips his head back. He looks up at the stars.
“I missed this,” he whispers.
The older agent doesn’t answer for a long time.
“Me too,” he responds, finally.

Or, Bill and Holden take the six hour trip to Huntington, West Virginia. A rude, faulty diner sign catches the former's attention. The latter is too anxious about the conference they're attending in Huntington to really deny the questionable food they find in the diner; food is food, no matter how skittish his appetite may be.
Amidst his night terrors and frequent bouts of disassociation, Holden finds comfort in the fact that even a diner in the middle of nowhere can make the perfect basket of fries.

Months after ATKID is shut down for good, one case in the winter of '81 has changed everything.
Now, in the spring of '82, between routine panic attacks and a mountain of new cases, Holden struggles to make sense of it all.
The only thing keeping him grounded is something Bill had given him those many months ago. He knows he has to give it back, but doing so would require two things of him: talking to Bill--when their current relationship is rocky at best--and letting go of the only part of him he's ever gotten to possess.
There are the grand things in life--emerald rings, a seafoam green house, a red pickup with a hatchet in its bed--but they are obnoxiously loud and gaudy compared to the everyday miscellaneous. The trivial, mundane objects of life have ghosts within them.
For once, it's not just Holden's ghosts haunting him.
It's Bill's, too.
