Summary
Tess is a powerful underworld figure, brokering information. When an internal threat has her questioning the loyalties of those closest, she must enlist the help of someone who has just as much to lose as she does. A bodyguard/boss AU set in the 1970s.
His fingertips brushed through the curtain of hair hanging to her waist. Dressing like a goddamn hippie with motivations that were resolutely square. A capitalist muckety-muck playing dress-ups with the beautiful people. Tess had some goddamn nerve and he wanted every last piece of her, Duke’s warnings be damned.
Because Duke was right – he’d never met anyone like her before. And maybe by getting a little closer he could unravel the enigma, because he’d meant what he’d told Duke – one woman was, essentially, the same as another. There were a finite number of parts people could play. And she was just playing one of them, concealing it a little better than most.
Tess whispered again in his ear: “You answer to me, now.”

“What do you do?” Bill asked, curious to learn more about this man who seemed so different from himself.
“I’m an artist.”
“What, like with paint and shit?”
Bill was sometimes proud of how badly he could put his foot in it.
Frank just laughed. “Less of the latter and more of the former, but yes, exactly.”

What if the apocalypse never happened? What if Bill and Frank had just met?

Summary
At the sound of crying coming from outside, both brothers trained their eyes forward towards Ellie’s room. There were two women, both dressed in suits and wearing easy-to-see-through smiles, perched at the foot of her bed. A pit of guilt fell through Joel’s stomach. “... what do you think they’ll do with Ellie?” He finally realized, almost guilty that the thought hadn’t come to him sooner.
“Find some group-home to send her to,” Tommy muttered in a low tone. By the sounds of the crying from Ellie’s room, she clearly didn’t want to go, not that either of them needed that to know she wouldn’t want to go to a fucking orphanage.
But Joel was no longer the man he’d been, so he left her there and let them take her.
TLDR// Foster au with a little spin on it. Ellie and Sarah are best friends, they have been since they were infants. Sarah has the perfect family, or at least, in Ellie's mind she does. She has the perfect dad, the perfect uncle. Ellie has a no-show father and a drunk mother. So, when Sarah and Ellie’s mother die in a crash, she and Joel have no one else but each other.
… it just takes him a little bit.

Summary
You may have been young when the world fell, but you adapted with all the challenges that come with trying to survive. You spent your time doing runs out in the badlands beyond the QZ walls to ensure people had little pleasures to keep them going. You were dropping off some medical supplies that FEDRA was willing to pay big for when you got tangled up in a mission that involves a teenager with a mouth almost as smart as yours and gruff older man whose graying curls were his only redeeming quality. But the longer you traveled with them and the more that happened out in the open land of what once was, the more you find yourself connecting with them and wanting to protect them both at any cost.

Summary
As soon as she sees Joel within shooting distance, Ellie lets the gun in her hands fall to the ground. She pulls her knees to her chest, arms wrapped tightly around them, face buried in her arms.
“What’s wrong?” he demands when he thinks she’ll be able to hear him.
She doesn’t look at him or respond other than to hold out her right hand.
It twitches.
Fuck.

Summary
Ellie is in her freshman year at Onion Creek High School in Austin, TX. She joins the high school's radio class and gets to have a radio show where she talks live on air and picks the music in real time. Meanwhile Joel listens to KOCR every morning on the way to work. Even though he hates kids (or just can't stand the reminder of his dead daughter,) he loves alternative music and no commercials so it's his favorite radio station. He just makes sure to only listen in the mornings when none of the students are on air. Until Ellie, who has to go straight home after school every day, starts a morning show.
or
Joel gets pissed about there being a kid on the radio and then because he is SO mad about it, he adopts her.

Routines by PaigeGoneRogue for Bumblepony

Summary
Everyone had a routine, and Joel was no different. Some people strayed from their routine, making it inconsistent, unreliable, but they always came back to it. Their routines changed and shifted over the years, the only thing staying the same was that they woke up and fell asleep each day. Sometimes they died, and then that routine was over, leaving nothing but the memory of it. The ache to go back to a safer, happier time.
Almost everyone changed their routines. Trying new things or letting go of old ones. But not Joel. Not anymore. His routine was normal. Safe. It wasn’t happy, but it was what he did. He didn’t know what he’d do without it.
It repeated over and over and over again. An infinite loop. Monotony.

Summary
“You won’t come back the same Miller. The shit I’ve seen there is so cruel you’ll walk ‘outta there with your hands in your hair, wishing you never entered in the first place.” One of the guys at an odd job told him. But Joel knew something was wrong with him when only he could drop those bodies from the trucks into the fire pit as if it were a sack of sand. No matter how big or small. Something he didn’t have the guts to do 20 years ago. Besides, the work wasn’t half as bad. Keeping guard in local area’s and rarely having to put someone down, besides infected of course. In the world they lived in it was considered a luxury.
Only thing not so nice?
Having to eat in the same cafeteria as those God-forsaken kids FEDRA kept around to build into soldiers. It was a new program FEDRA set up a few weeks ago. The adult soldiers would have lunch with the kids. The project was meant to show the kids what it would mean to be disciplined and grow into a respectful officer one day. Of course, the reality of that wasn’t so black and white.

Summary
...
What would have happened if Joel was the one bitten at the museum? This is an exploration of TLOU, with Tess taking Ellie across country in search of the Fireflies—and maybe some hope.
...
"If Ellie chooses to be cruel and say those things, she could at least decide when Tess gives up on her, like it’s bound to happen anyway.
But no word comes out of her mouth.
Because above all else, she’s pathetic, and embarrassingly dependent on whatever it is she feels when she’s with Tess like this, even if it’s all in her head, even if they’re on a ticking clock.
She doesn’t want to hurt Tess.
She wants to crawl in her arms and scream, or cry, or maybe both."

Summary
"Now, Ellie sleeps almost peacefully in the road, mere feet away from the bodies of the long infected.
He has to admit, he is sort of concerned. Never before has she just passed out on him like this. Especially when facing infected. She seemed fine a moment ago, fired up for violence in that way only a naive kid can be. She unsheathed her knife with a crooked smile, ready to take on the bumbling infected and also maybe the world."

Ellie is humanities’ only hope. But on the journey to becoming savior of the world, she can't seem to stop falling asleep.

Summary
“What do you want to hear about tonight, kiddo?”
The corners of Ellie’s lips scrunched to one side as she pondered. “What’d you do?” She finally decided. A smile settled over her face. “Were you a millionaire, Dad?”
A chuckle fell from Joel’s chest. His laugh was warm, hearty, strong, just like him. “No, baby,” He replied, amused by the thought. “If I was a millionaire, we’d have us a fancy bunker to live in.”
Ellie lit up at the idea. “With a rocket ship?”
Joel smiled. “Sure, kiddo,” He answered, his tone soft. “And so much food that we’d get sick.”
TLDR// Joel is Ellie's biological father. We enter the first season and its events with a clear and close relationship between them. Marlene doesn't hire him to smuggle a kid, she's his daughter, and he just wants a better world for her. This will cover the entire first season.
