(Or, Harry is thrown into the past and, after some ranting and raving against this newest bit of insanity in his life, decides he is going to give the whole nature-vs-nurture debate a go. So, he adopts little Tom and then promptly moves the two of them to America, hoping to avoid Britain’s various bloodpurity politics. Because, surely, New York must be entirely free of any dark lords for Harry to vanquish… Right?)

He is locked in chains and held up against a great pillar at the very back of the Chamber, his head hanging limply, chin to chest. His hair is like black ink that hangs over his face, obscuring half of it. Where he is pale, his flesh is whiter than snow, and where he is not, gashes and lacerations mar the smooth skin. Black liquid oozes from his wounds with the consistency of oil. Even his Slytherin robe is saturated with his ebony blood.
And hidden behind the terrifying radiance of his scarlet eyes, pain lurks. Pain that Harry cannot ignore.
The only solution seems to exist solely in the past. Because of course it does.

Tom's newest guardian doesn't seem very bright, but he does seem powerful.
Harry also sheds - a lot - being some sort of animal shapeshifter, and it's rather eye opening for Tom when it's him who has to hit his guardian on the nose with a goddamn newspaper for stashing food underneath the bed.
