"Jeff feels pathetic for letting it happen. He could have done more to prevent it but he didn’t. He knows that he can hide bruises under a shirt. It’s a lot harder to hide your face. There’s no way to hide this. There’s a lot that Jeff has been hiding. He’s hidden it from his friends, but worse he’s tried to hide it from himself."
Jeff has been hiding his abusive relationship with Dan and finally reaches out for help. Chip is there to keep him safe, but his own feelings for Jeff get in the way. As quickly as one relationship ends, another beings, even though it may not be the best time do so.

“Oh good, still more nervous than Jeff though.”
“Oh god yeah, of course. He’s never--is he ever nervous, any time?”
“I think he channels it via like tubes down his back, actual visible tubes, down...”
“That’s why he always wears a suit.”
“Yeah, it’s to mask his dune armor that takes his nervousness--”
“Where does it go?”
“It goes into his balls, obviously because the more nervous he should be the bigger his balls get.”
“Uh huh.”
