It's Valentine's Day and the romantic evening Fred and Ginger had planned seems to be falling apart. Can their celebration still be memorable? A prequel of sorts to my story To Let You Go, set more than 10 years before. Fluff and (lots of) lemons!
Fred masked his frustration to his best extent, but the annoyed huff with which he delivered the words didn't go unnoticed.
“Look, the issue is that that story has been selling too well. Nothing against you or her; your partnership is lucrative and it’s working wonders for the company. No one is saying you don’t like Ginger for real, it’s just a marketing ploy. You’ve never been opposed to good publicity in the past,” Berman pointed out.
“I have, if said publicity is built upon blatant lies,” Fred shot back, throwing one arm out in frustration.

Ginger Roger and Fred Astaire continue their love affair. Working on separate projects and waiting impatiently to start their next movie in the spring, they live their separate lives. Stolen moments of intimacy hold them together while trapped in the strict grip of the Hollywood studio system and the tangled web of circumstances that keep them apart. With Fred's family placing demands on him, and Ginger's ambition to pursue dramatic roles, the two struggle to find equilibrium in their professional and private lives together. The odds are against them. But seemingly mild-mannered Fred has an iron will, and Ginger's friends don't call her "Champ" for no reason. Keeping their secrets and loving one another is their goal. Will they succeed?
"Life is not a matter of holding good cards, but of playing a poor hand well." ~ Robert Louis Stevenson
Follows the events of "Vivacious Lady" and "Carefree".
Adele Astaire despises her little brothers' new wife. She gets the last word.

Between "Shall We Dance" and "Carefree", something changed in the relationship between Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire.
Fred had always looked at Ginger like she hung the moon, but prior to "Carefree", the eighth of their nine films ("Barkley's" would come a decade later), he had never kissed his leading lady on film. Then suddenly, he did, in all three of their final films. Whatever had been holding him back, no longer was.
This is the story of what changed for these two secret lovers.

Life if full of hellos and goodbyes. For Ginger's beach house in Malibu, it's time to say goodbye. She and Fred no longer need their oasis from the world; she is retreating, gradually pulling back her energies to the essentials, and he is slowly slipping away. There's time enough for one last moment together, though, here in this special place. If these walls could speak, what a story they could tell.
If in the twilight of memory
we should meet once more…
we shall speak again together
and you shall sing to me
a deeper song…
And if our hands should meet
in another dream, we shall build
another tower in the sky…
~ Kahlil Gibran

Returning after a short break after "Swing Time", Fred and Ginger move on to their next challenges and the Studio begins to think about what the actors should do after the Astaire-Rogers years. Fred's wife Phyllis binds him tighter to herself with the baby and a new house for their family. Ginger has at least three eligible bachelors - each famous, wealthy, handsome and talented - knocking on her door. Each wedge that drives them further apart makes them want the other more. Their last contracted movie, "Shall We Dance", begins on Christmas Eve, 1936. Will they get on with their lives, or come back together for a new beginning?
"Shall we dance
Or keep on moping?
Shall we dance
and walk on air?
Shall we give in
Or shall we dance
With never a care?"
- George & Ira Gershwin
Follows the events before and during and after the film "Shall We Dance", from September 1936 into July 1937.

It is early 1936 and Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire are at the top of their game. Hit after hit have made the dancing-acting duo household names and famous beyond their wildest dreams. Their careers are red hot, and their movies are the only thing keeping RKO Studio out of bankruptcy. Fred's son was born in January, right after the wrap of "Follow the Fleet", and his relationship with his wife is a cold partnership of convenience. Ginger's marriage to Lew Ayers is on the rocks, both due to Ginger and Fred's affair, and her insistence on being a working actress with her own career. However, with the birth of Freddie Jr., Ginger has called for a break. Will they call the whole thing off or make up? "Swing Time", frequently hailed as their best movie, will tell the tale.
"Though, I'm left without my Penny,
The wolf was not smart.
He left me my heart.
And so, I cannot go for anything
But the la belle,
La perfectly swell romance."
"Never Gonna Dance" by Jerome Kern & Dorothy Fields

"Follow the Fleet" was Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger's fifth movie, and after several years of working together, they have become famous for their character's swell romances and their amazing dancing partnership. Behind the scenes, their actual illicit romance is hotter than anything ever seen on screen, and beleaguered by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, as the saying goes. Will their relationship survive the latest challenge?
"There may be trouble ahead,
But while there's moonlight and music and love and romance,
Let's face the music and dance
Before the fiddlers have fled,
Before they ask us to pay the bill,
And while we still have the chance,
Let's face the music and dance
Soon, we'll be without the moon,
Humming a different tune
There may be teardrops to shed,
So while there's moonlight and music and love and romance,
Face the music and dance...."
by Irving Berlin
Follows the film "Follow the Fleet", shot in 1935 and premiered in 1936.

Fred Astaire was an amazing dancer, a good actor and a perfect gentleman who enjoyed secrets and double entrendes.
What if there’s more to his songs that we realize? This story is set during the filming of "The Barkleys of Broadway" in 1949.

But it really doesn't matter
If the skies are gray.
Long as I can be with you,
It's a lovely day."

STORY ONE. It all began in New York City, in October of 1930. Fred Astaire (31) met Ginger Rogers (19) on the set of her Broadway play, Girl Crazy, and the rest is history. This is the story of what may have happened until Ginger left for Hollywood in June, 1931. There's a reason why we still talk about their legend decades later.
That reason is love.
Follows the vague comments in Ginger's autobiography "Ginger" and Fred's autobiography, "Steps In Time".
