It's Valentine's Day and the romantic evening Fred and Ginger had planned seems to be falling apart. Can their celebration still be memorable? A prequel of sorts to my story To Let You Go, set more than 10 years before. Fluff and (lots of) lemons!

Fred masked his frustration to his best extent, but the annoyed huff with which he delivered the words didn't go unnoticed.

“Look, the issue is that that story has been selling too well. Nothing against you or her; your partnership is lucrative and it’s working wonders for the company. No one is saying you don’t like Ginger for real, it’s just a marketing ploy. You’ve never been opposed to good publicity in the past,” Berman pointed out.

“I have, if said publicity is built upon blatant lies,” Fred shot back, throwing one arm out in frustration.

    Summary

Returning after a short break after "Swing Time", Fred and Ginger move on to their next challenges and the Studio begins to think about what the actors should do after the Astaire-Rogers years. Fred's wife Phyllis binds him tighter to herself with the baby and a new house for their family. Ginger has at least three eligible bachelors - each famous, wealthy, handsome and talented - knocking on her door. Each wedge that drives them further apart makes them want the other more. Their last contracted movie, "Shall We Dance", begins on Christmas Eve, 1936. Will they get on with their lives, or come back together for a new beginning?

    "Shall we dance
    Or keep on moping?
    Shall we dance
    and walk on air?
    Shall we give in
    to despair?
    Or shall we dance
    With never a care?"

    - George & Ira Gershwin

    Summary

It is early 1936 and Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire are at the top of their game. Hit after hit have made the dancing-acting duo household names and famous beyond their wildest dreams. Their careers are red hot, and their movies are the only thing keeping RKO Studio out of bankruptcy. Fred's son was born in January, right after the wrap of "Follow the Fleet", and his relationship with his wife is a cold partnership of convenience. Ginger's marriage to Lew Ayers is on the rocks, both due to Ginger and Fred's affair, and her insistence on being a working actress with her own career. However, with the birth of Freddie Jr., Ginger has called for a break. Will they call the whole thing off or make up? "Swing Time", frequently hailed as their best movie, will tell the tale.

    STORY SEVEN

"Though, I'm left without my Penny,
    The wolf was not smart.
    He left me my heart.
And so, I cannot go for anything
    But the la belle,
    La perfectly swell romance."

"Never Gonna Dance" by Jerome Kern & Dorothy Fields

    Summary

"Follow the Fleet" was Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger's fifth movie, and after several years of working together, they have become famous for their character's swell romances and their amazing dancing partnership. Behind the scenes, their actual illicit romance is hotter than anything ever seen on screen, and beleaguered by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, as the saying goes. Will their relationship survive the latest challenge?

    STORY SIX

    "There may be trouble ahead,
But while there's moonlight and music and love and romance,
Let's face the music and dance

    Before the fiddlers have fled,
Before they ask us to pay the bill,
And while we still have the chance,
Let's face the music and dance

Soon, we'll be without the moon,
    Humming a different tune
    And then...

There may be teardrops to shed,
So while there's moonlight and music and love and romance,
    Face the music and dance...."

    Summary

STORY ONE. It all began in New York City, in October of 1930. Fred Astaire (31) met Ginger Rogers (19) on the set of her Broadway play, Girl Crazy, and the rest is history. This is the story of what may have happened until Ginger left for Hollywood in June, 1931. There's a reason why we still talk about their legend decades later.

    That reason is love.

Follows the vague comments in Ginger's autobiography "Ginger" and Fred's autobiography, "Steps In Time".
