This was a terrible idea.
An absurdly idiotic terrible idea.
Yet in retrospect, Eddie really should've seen this coming.

Summary
“So what does that mean?” Buck asked, hands shaking as he squinted at the x-rays before him. It was early, and he had gotten maybe two hours of sleep last night because of nerves and back to back coughing fits. He was too tired for sugar coating, and that’s exactly what the doctor was doing.
“It means that we found something irregular in your x-rays and scans.” The doctor looked sympathetic, and ten years older than he did the day before.
“What did you find Doc?” Bucks hands were starting to shake and he didn’t know why. He doesn’t even know what was wrong yet, it could still be a virus.
“Are you sure you don’t want anybody with you right now, Mr. Buckley?” Dr. Simmons' voice was laced with sympathy, and Buck was honestly confused why he wasn’t writing out a prescription for some extra strength antibiotics and sending him on his way— it was just a virus.
“Tell me.” Buck meant to put some conviction in his tone but all that came out was a choked whisper.
It was just a virus, a common cold that he couldn’t shake—a—a
“We found a tumor in your left lung, about the size of a lemon and the reason for your cough and chest pain.”
It was silent.

Summary
After Maddie's revelation in 4x04 Buck starts to come undone.
He really shouldn’t have been surprised. The Buckley family was built on secrets, Buck had always known that. All the things Maddie and Buck had hidden from their parents as children for fear of punishment. All the things that happened after Maddie left college and were kept from her because they would be too upsetting or distracting. All the things that happened behind closed doors in the Kendall house. This had clearly just set the precedent.
Spoilers for 4x04!

Summary
After the lawsuit, things had been rough for Evan Buckley at Station 118.
Everyone seemed to follow their Captain's lead, just speaking to him when it was absolutely necessary. Everyone except for Chimney and Hen, but Buck had never felt so lonely before.
He couldn't bring himself to tell anyone about what was happening.
"You're exhausting." "Suck it up."
Eddie's words were always present on his mind every time his leg ached, every time he was insulted by someone on his shift, every time Bobby told him "My house, my rules."
Until one day, he arrived at Maddie's house and found two other men with her.
They had come all the way from Hawaii just to check on him.
Steve McGarrett had kept his promise and he had never wanted to punch someone more than when Buck told him about the last months of his life. -

Summary
He's sinking.
That's as far as he can get his brain to go: that he's being pulled down under by something deep and inevitable. Black-hole gravity.
Well. No use fighting it, then.
Buck's sick, but he's not alone.

Summary
Buck’s lips twisted into a line. He wanted to say something. He wanted to tell these people, the people who were supposed to be his friends, his family, that Saturday was his thirtieth birthday and he was hoping they would remember and want to celebrate it. But as they all stared at him, clearly unaware of the pain that they were causing him, he felt his heart break. Because clearly, they didn’t care about him the way he cared about them.
---
Or, Buck is completely heartbroken when he realizes his family has forgotten his birthday. As Buck deals with the emotional hurt of feeling unloved and like he's never the one chosen, the 118 works to make it up to Buck and show him just how much he means to all of them.

So for now, he settles on being sad and lonely and in denial about his own feels for Eddie. He made a promise to Christopher that he wasn’t going anywhere and he intends to keep it, no matter what.

Summary
Eddie had seen the Prince before, a few years prior during the marriage of then Prince Strand and a noblemen by the name of Carlos.
Prince Evan had been reserved and quiet standing stiff next to his father King Phillip the only time Eddie saw the Prince relax was when he was left alone by his father to talk to Prince Strand. He had been young then and he was still young now wide innocence eyes screaming louder than the fake air of confidence he was trying to put off.
