It's mesmerizing, in a way, to watch the clouds of dirt and soot and debris form into new shapes in the water. Staring into the murky, filthy galaxy that surrounds him is a good distraction from the thoughts that would otherwise be occupying his mind. There's no reaping in any of the worlds the galaxy of filth holds. There's no Games either. There doesn't have to be. It's just grimy water.

Summary
Annona Springwater was so close to being able to walk away from the age group required by the Capitol to put their names into the reaping bowls of District 9. So close to being able to walk away from the Hunger Games and everything associated with them. Today was supposed to be the last time her name should have ever been entered into the glass bowl.
District 9 was nothing special and growing up as part of the most prominent wheat farmers of the grain district, Annona had her fair share of both labor and the fruits of it for as long as she can remember. Forced to do minimal schooling and tend to the fields during the harvesting seasons, her family became well-known for their work ethic and wealth as they became the main suppliers of wheat for the Capital and Peacekeepers.
As soon as her name is read aloud during the reaping for the 72nd Hunger Games and having to be reaped alongside a boy she's never talked to before, Annona decides that she will try to win the games without killing - even if the other tributes try to kill her first.

"Ah, this is about the boy from District 2.” Liita tilts her head and frowns. “Pretty face, strong body--I may not be into that, but I can see how one might be attracted to him.” She shrugs.
Din crosses his arms defensively. “I’m not...attracted to him.”
She wears a small, knowing smirk. “Never said you were.”
He scowls and walks towards the next training station. “And he’s not that pretty.”
Liita snorts. “You’re a terrible liar.”
“Okay, so he’s pretty. Whatever. But he’s also dangerous.”
“Careers always are," she counters. "Your point?”
“This guy--he’s more than dangerous, he’s--”
“As psycho as a sith with a saber?” Liita supplies.
“Exactly.” Din halts at the painting station where the Stray is drawing with a stubby, green finger.
“Look, the Plan doesn’t involve hunting Careers down. Our orders were to--” Now the girl stops to stare at the child. Realization dawns on her face.
Din doesn’t take his eyes off the child. “You have your orders. I have mine.”

Some with just a shallow cut and others on Death’s doorstep. It’s easier to come to the Oikawas and far cheaper than chancing a visit to the district’s Capitol assigned doctor. At least with the Oikawas, the sick are guaranteed a healer who cares even if they can’t always provide the means the Capitol easily can.
“Nature’s first green is gold,” he starts to read, only to freeze when he hears a familiar voice breathlessly ask, “Where’s Oikawa?”
The response is a loud shush and then the ruckus quickly dwindles. He takes the steps down to the kitchen two at a time and what he sees makes his blood run cold.
