Summary
Dean is like a car speeding through a long stretch of road in a desert, leaving nothing but dust in his wake. He runs like the sun on his heels will kill him if he gets caught in the rays. Dean is like the violent wind ripping through a mountain range. You hear it, you fear it; but you never see him. He’s a wave, he’s a rolling storm cloud. Disastrous. Something to fear. Shoot first, ask questions later. Dean goes and he goes and he goes. He’s ready for a fight, wherever he is. Like the devil’s on speed dial. Pedal to the medal, guns blazing. He doesn't know how to stop, because he thinks he’ll find himself on the wrong end of a blade or a gun or a fang if he does.
And he really believes all of this with his whole being. Destructive, angry, broken. A soldier, a weapon, a martyr.
Nothing but a sad mimic of his father.
A monster.Series

Summary
Dean doesn't like reading (this a lie but Dean has always struggled to do things for himself) and Sam is a Stanford graduate with a penchant for classics (he gets the chance to make Dean read some). They're stuck in a bunker, burning off the last of their adrenaline while they wait for it to be safe to go back out again.
There's no TV, not even a radio. They've got a stack of books, courtesy of Sam, and a pretty empty fridge. Dean has nothing better to do, so he picks one of the books Sam chose for him.
And he discovers that words are maybe a bit too powerful, and that maybe it's time he starts reading more, because if a Russian novelist can describe him so concisely, what else is out there?Series

Summary
In front of the enormity of a life deprived of free will, where the fate of humanity rested in the hands of an uncaring God and a Heaven that was seconds away from crumbling over their heads, it was stupid to be so upset over a fight with his best friend. Cas wasn’t even dead, so why the hell did he feel like the first layer of his skin had been peeled off and now every single thing about the world was ten times more painful?

Summary
“Walls of darkness. Hiding the doors to Dean’s memories,” Cas muses and frowns. “We could be surrounded by thousands, all of them hidden from our perception.”
“Until we stand in the right place, looking in the right direction,” Sam continues, rubbing the back of his neck.
“It is a clever tactic on Michael’s part,” Cas admits grudgingly. “All of the doors are identical so we will inevitably back-track to the same memories multiple times.”
“So, it’s some kind of…maze?” Sam points out.

Summary
He looks over at Dean, who is not looking over at him. He’s checking his blind spots before pulling back onto the road. He even turns the blinker on as they leave the shoulder. It’s absurd. Sam thinks that he could reach out right now and his hand might go straight through Dean. He’s some kind of illusion of the moonlight hitting the windshield just right, and if Sam tilted his head the whole mirage of their brotherhood would disappear. Sam had momentarily seen past the mask Dean wears, and he hadn’t even realized he’d been wearing one.

Summary
Dean is aimless, finding no way to get Cas back from the Empty.
One day, Claire shows up and drags him on a hunt, and over time Dean begins to find purpose again in traveling with Claire, helping Jody around the house, camping with Sam, and eventually starting to open up about the things he's never been able to say aloud.
In the winter, Dean takes a job for Jody’s friends, fixing up their old inn and looking after it for the season.
Time moves forward, but Cas is always on Dean’s mind. He’s going to get him back, and he’s going to say what he needs to say.

Summary
As Dean sits here alone in the dark of this summer's night, going through some sort of an introspection journey deep down memory lane _ as he’s finding himself doing more and more for a while now _ as he tries his hardest to make sense of things. Of memories.
Yes, Dean thinks; hindsight is like looking through a sharp, new set of eyes.
Sometimes disorienting, yet the closest thing to crystal clear.

Summary
Huntersville, North Carolina. The place where, for nearly five months, Dean and Sam had pretended to be normal. The place where, for nearly five months, it had kind of worked.
Jed was Dean's first friend. He’d just needed a friend. He’d really needed a friend.
Jed was a friend. Jed was that friend. A good friend. Just a friend.
Jed was just a friend.
-
Carrying the Mark of Cain and losing more of himself every day, Dean returns to Huntersville, a town his dad left him and Sam in for months when he was only fourteen. The town where he made his first friend. More than friend. Returning to it decades later, Dean doesn't know what he's expecting. And he can't bring himself to admit what it is he wants, out loud.
He knows he's never gonna get it, anyway.

Summary
Riverside, New Hampshire. 1996.
“You think about the Bible a lot, Dean?”
It’s an odd question. “Not any more than I have to,” is Dean’s eventual reply.
Something seems to soften behind Isaiah’s eyes. “Alright,” he says, and blows smoke into Dean’s face.
