Christine's baba’s mama was a witch. Or at least, that's what the family legends asserted. It wasn’t a huge thing.
A few years into the Snap, before Stephen had sped off to be Glinda the Good Witch in space and returned as a commemorative statue, Christine was tasked with getting rid of her parents’ stuff. She found the sewing box behind what must have been a half-dozen old computer hard drives. It was a mess: bits and bobs and notions, little handwritten notes and dangerously sharp scissors. Tucked under the ancient packages of elastic ribbon from long-shuttered department stores was a journal.
Christine had taken a little Ukrainian on weekends as a girl, and had a few Russian colleagues at the hospital. Most of the notes were about patterns and modifications, so they were half numbers. Yeah, I could probably do this, she thought.
