The first time it happened, it was an accident.
Dropping her sewing supplies, she rose and was about to go heal up at the kitchen, but.. the sight of it, and the sting sizzling on her skin, and this strange sensation - seemingly stealing her into its warm, ghastly embrace was.... captivating.
It felt like the whole world fell away; it was just her floating in a void of forced serenity.
She didn't go downstairs.
The next time her grief overflowed, the left-out child reached out....

After never receiving a gift like all of her siblings and cousins, Mirabel has tried her best to make the best of her life being normal. She's still a Madrigal. No matter how much her Abuela pushes her away. No matter how much her cousins look down on her. No matter how much Luisa ignores her. No matter how much Isabela scolds and bullies her.
As the years pass, it's almost like she's invisible in her own home. Hidden away behind the nursey door, no one except her parents wondered if she was okay. And even then, them being shooed away because "she'll be okay". As the years pass, it's like no one knows she's there anymore. And so, Mirabel decides for the better of her family and the Encanto to just go and stop being in the way.

Mirabel did get a gift, but it didn't come with a door and that, combined with the fact she could turn into one of those evil dragons from the fairy tales, was enough for her to grow up believing her gift was a curse and a bad omen.
She had to keep it secret or else she was absolutely certain she would be kicked out of Casita and Encanto.
