3 Works in Brassed Off (1996)

So, one of the all time greats of comedy, Victoria Wood, died yesterday, at the far too young age of 62. She was incredible, whether doing stand up (google her pregnancy riff), writing parody scripts (Plots and Proposals, Lark Rise to Cranchester, or the piece this is based on, Brassed Up) and of course writing amazing comic songs (The Ballad of Barry and Freda, aka "Beat me on the bottom with a Woman's Weekly"). I like to think she would have made the ultimate tenth walker. So here she is, in the scene in the movie where our heroine first walks into the band room... I mean, Mines of Moria. Will the fellowship accept her? Will they take a Lancastrian into their proud Yorkshire numbers?

Albion Brass Band Amateurs (ABBA for short) have got financial problems, and some key players have deserted them, 3 months before the main Yorkshire contest. The band fishes around for money-raising ideas. Enter lanky, flugel-playing Irishman Merlin Emrys, and spoilt, classically-trained trumpeter Arthur Pendragon. It's hate (i.e. lust) at first sight.
Or: The cast of Merlin meets Brassed Off meets Calendar Girls meets the Full Monty in a glorious Yorkshire homage. With Yorkshire beer! A musical director who calls everyone "Love"! And a purple flugelhorn! I might even insert whippets. You have been warned. Contains some ripe language and explicit descriptions of typical band-room banter. Ayup!
Past off-stage non-con episodes and their consequences are described by the affected characters.
