Castle Dimitrescu gets shipments of criminals on a regular basis. Most are used for wine, while others are given positions within the castle to work/replace staff members. Valen is fortunate (or perhaps unfortunate) enough to be given a position in the kitchens.
Prior knowledge, though very little, about the castle and its inhabitants have her thankful for another chance at life; even if that life is threatened constantly.
