Ampersand puts his head in her lap, a deliberate show of trust, and says, “The loss of a symphyle can never be replaced. I will not attempt to do so, but I do, and will continue to feel—” he deliberates on what word to use and then decides on “—empty. I miss Obelus but I do not want him back.”
That’s… not the worst thing he could’ve said.
“Hmm,” Cora answers. Like she can’t relate. Like he just told her a fun thought experiment to consider. Like there isn’t a Nils-shaped supermassive black hole inside of her that’s starting to form its own fucking galaxy.
