Kurusu leans forward and says, “Look. You do deserve to feel this bad. I’m sorry, but you do. But you don’t deserve to be alone while you deal with it. So I’ll leave now if you want me to, but I’m coming back tomorrow. All right?” Goro wipes his face with his sleeve and glowers at him: Great Akira the Moralizer, who knows exactly what everyone else deserves. Perfect, beloved Akira.

“And what are the ingredients needed for a perfect loaf?” Goro inquires out of sheer need to continue this tirade, if not to entertain the barista.

“The basics, I gather.”
“And,” adds Kurusu, coy, “love, of course.”

Summary
Akechi Goro is stuck in a rut. And by “a rut,” he specifically means the Kyoto Prefecture, his new home, and his new self-employment venture. After he is wrongfully ousted from his position as a detective in Tokyo’s Special Investigation Unit, all he can do is hope to redeem himself by solving a cold serial murder case that has eluded national and prefectural investigators for far too long.
When he makes the acquaintance of a local barista-slash-activist with a checkered past and a vendetta not dissimilar from his own, Goro begins to suspect that a deeper conspiracy could tie the murders—and a former case—together. His personal paranoia aside, Goro has to uncover the truth as his past and the present collide, endangering everyone around him.

“I know you’re a fashionably late kind of person, but would it have killed you to fix your car earlier?” Akechi remarks.
Haru laughs. “Well, I didn’t really know until just now.” She says, before pushing the dark doors open. “Shall we?”
“You were the one who invited me after all.”
OR: Haru and Akechi have a talk about what transpired in Kunikazu Okumura's Palace, and the events surrounding his death.

Summary
“anything you want is yours if you take up my offer”, he eventually replies. “money, better publicity—”, he tilts his head. “a reference from a well-respected psychiatrist to an even better endocrinologist. a plastic surgeon.” he slides the file back over to me. “legal guardianship, for the necessary paperwork. all you need to do is look at what i give you, and tell me what you see. it’s that simple.”
it is, of course, never that simple. and yet... and yet names carry the weight of things. names are bathroom-passes and names are rare opals in rural mines. a name, my name, held so much weight.
i would do anything to shake it off.

Summary
Shido is exactly the sort of person who assumes that he has the right to take out his petty feelings on everything else around him. Because the habit never got crushed out of him. Because nobody ever taught him to be smaller, to hide away, that this world is not his to participate in. Because nobody can stop him from doing it, now that he’s old and rich and in charge of people’s paychecks. Goro takes these moments for himself, files them away, keeps them sharp. He’d rather die than forget why he’s angry. He’s very glad that Shido makes such a career out of reminding Goro why he’s angry every minute of every day.
