The cookbook she smuggled into their mansion when their mother fell sick, so he could bake for her. The backdoor key she copied for him in his teenage years, when he finally found friends, when he had something to sneak out for.
She’d laugh every time they hit him, but she’d stay afterwards, too. Lead him to her bedroom, hand in hand, hide him there for a brief respite. “You’re always winding them up,” she would say, sitting him down on her bed. His cheeks would be swollen with bruises and she would watch him, still as the surface of a lake.

Was Zeff finally sick and decided he was gonna get rid of him?... Did the man find out he was a failure , what was he going to do in case Zeff deemed it not worth keeping him around?... Or was he gonna bother trying to fix him up by some kicks?...

this man saved him, and sanji had kicked him down to the ground.
i'm doing this for your own good, he thought, unsure whether he was convincing himself or the pirates he grew to love so much. the last thing nami and luffy saw of their former cook was the look of guilt and regret that flashed across his face for just that moment before he turned away, and they froze speechless as they watched the carriage drive further and further away.the next time they'd see him, it wouldn't be sanji. at least, not the same sanji - not with that slick, vanta black hair and those dull eyes.
or, to put it simply, sanji learns what it really means to be a vinsmoke, and realizes the lengths his nakama would go to just to rescue their cook.
