Comment on Liquid Courage

  1. This is fantastic and hilarious! "I'm here to seduce you, had a nice ring to it, but that sword was awfully close and he'd prefer his last words to be more…dignified." That had me rolling! Also "You have a sister?" / "I don't remember." One needs a bit of humor to lighten up the end of this show, anyway!

    1. Thank you! This fic is an oldie but a goodie (one of the only Samuari 7 fics I migrated over my Fanfiction.net) and I'm glad to see the fandom still has life in it! (Swallowing a sick/sad pun about "life" regarding these characters). Agreed, a certain amount of humor is probably necessary to cope. Not that I don't also ship this in deadly seriousness, but...I'm not sure there's enough sake in the world to get there...

      1. I noticed there weren't that many fics for it, which is a shame (only 36 in English here on Ao3). I decided that I could at least give a little love to the fics there are! I watched the show because I've been brushing up on my Kurosawa movies and I was intrigued by the idea of "Seven Samurai ... WITH MECHA!" So I was expecting the lighthearted beginning to turn into a sad ending. Alas.

But yes...! I was gaping at my laptop after that first fight scene between Kyuzo and Kanbei... that wasn't even subtext, that was straight-up bolded capitals! They have a dynamic that's just perfect for writing fics about (heck, I might even write one).

        1. Back when I was more heavily involved in the fandom, I remember a lot of fic being on LiveJournal (I hope some of it has been preserved & migrated elsewhere!). It would be awesome to see more new writers if you'd ever like to try.

And yeah, "Seven Samurai WITH MECHA" was such a brilliant idea! I watched the anime before seeing the Kurosawa film properly--then after I did, I went on to watch the Magnificent Seven movie (which now has a new version coming out--or already has? Hmm). It can be a bit of a rabbit hole!

          1. I watched The Magnificent Seven just before the show, and I'll watch the new version at some point. It's really fascinating to see what the various adaptations choose to focus on, what they keep and what they leave out. While watching the show I kept having moments of "oh! now it's the wood-cutting scene!" or "hey! I know that line!" The anime was plenty of fun: even though the character designs were hilariously over-the-top, I couldn't complain about how they were adapted! I'll freely admit Kyuzo was my favorite in the original (followed by Kanbei) and I got a kick out of his adaptation.
