Summary
In his life, Itachi had done many things he wasn't proud of. No matter how one might try to justify it, he had undoubtedly committed unforgivable crimes in the name of what he thought was right. To make matters even worse, his actions not only didn't improve Sasuke's life but actually caused him even more pain. The only thing he could honestly say he had done right was stopping the Edo Tensei and showing Sasuke the whole truth, but that unfortunately didn't make up for a lifetime of mistakes.
With that in mind, waking up as a child almost two decades in the past was somewhat of a surprise. After all, weren't there people who deserved a second chance much more than he did? Weren't there people who could do much more good than him?
It was he who was in this position now, however, which meant it was up to him to create a better future. One in which his clan wouldn't be destroyed, Madara would be stopped, and, most importantly, Sasuke could be happy.
Itachi would make sure of that.

Naruto smiles up at him like there’s nothing wrong. His blond hair starts to turn to the color of blood, his blue eyes cloud into red. “I’ll see you on the other side.” He says, just before he burns up right in front of his eyes.
Sasuke screams until he lands flat on his back in a time that’s not his.Sasuke is tossed back into the past to stop the end of the world, but maybe the universe had wanted Naruto instead.
There's a wild Kurama running loose, rebuilding something that was lost long ago, and maybe thats a problem.
(Or: Time travel where it's Sasuke and Kurama who make it, for better or for worse)

The second thing Kakashi noticed about him was that he looked young, he looked around Kakashi’s age, no older than 21 or 22 at least. Blonde, unruly hair splayed out on the ground, the golden tips dyed red with his blood. His face looked calm, despite the state of the rest of him. Long blonde lashes rested against tan cheeks in his unconsciousness. Kakashi scowled at the scars that marred the man’s cheeks, three whisker like scars on each side, original cuts so deep they seemed indented still in his flesh. Blood seeped out of his nose and dribbled over his lax lips. Nothing about the man screamed imminent danger. He looked so small and innocent, pitiful in the puddle of his own blood.
---Or the one where Naruto crashes (quite literally) into a past that isn't his and not so smoothly tries to save it.

Itachi wakes up after he dies the second time in his bedroom before the Kyuubi attack on Konoha. He still has his Mangeku Sharingan and uses it to inform the Sondaime Hokage. He then proceeds to try to fix things.

They’re tired. This fight has been raging for years now with little to show for their efforts besides small setbacks and death, mainly on their side. Their numbers dwindle by the day and the ever looming shadows push them back further and further.
At this point, they’ll take just about any chance to fix this broken world.
It’s a good thing Kurama is good at multi-tasking, because he’s got a world to save, a team to keep whole and a promise to keep if he has anything to say about it.
