Summary
“A-Ying,” Lan Wangji says quietly, trying to gauge whether the boy is asleep. Even as the boy’s figure tenses and his head peaks out from the rest of his body to look around, he doesn’t stop shaking. His clothes are wet, Lan Wangji can see in the candlelight, clinging to his skin. Winter has not yet passed. The boy must be freezing.
“Hello?” A-Ying asks hesitantly, looking around. His eyes are big, but despite some suspicion in their depths, the boy mostly looks curious.
“Hello, A-Ying,” Lan Wangji says kindly. “I heard that you prayed to me.”

No one else is on horseback, not daring to expose water horses they have kept for a year or more to the salt sea on the first of October. Lan Wangji hears the murmurs as he goes past - “Ice prince,” a father says to his daughter, “the second Lan boy.”
It is not true. Lan Wangji is not made of ice, nor is he a prince. He is just - cold. Alone, when he is not with his horses, or when he is not with -
“Lan Zhan!” a voice calls, and Bichen and Lan Wangji both turn, powerless to not. Wei Wuxian is standing there, hands on his hips and his jeans soaked to the knee with brine, hair whipping around his face, eyes sharp and grey as the sky. Lan Wangji is not sure if he is breathing.
“Wei Ying,” he says, both as a greeting and as a continuation of his thought.

So there was this jar, and it had so much peanut butter still in it, and when his fox nose scented it and didn’t catch any poison or spoilage, what was he supposed to do? Not avail himself of this gift? No. He shoved his delicate little snout right in there and got to licking, but, you know… Elegantly. Definitely not snarfing and making horrible little fox sounds and rolling around on the ground while he went ham on the jar. Sure, he had to work a little bit to get at the last of it, but anything good is worth working for, right? So finally, triumphant, no longer starving, and maybe a little thirsty now from eating half a cup of peanut butter in about two minutes, he’d tried to remove his head from the jar.

Is it really so different to skate for joy than for obligation? Yes, it turns out.
The rink is cold, empty, and, vitally, silent. The ice is so fresh it’s almost hard to skate on, the sort of ice that makes someone want to fly. Lan Zhan does a quad lutz just for the sake of it, just to prove to himself that he can. He lands it. Of course he does.

This is one of the things about him that makes Lan Zhan’s heart weak with affection: for someone so loud and constant, his ability to go quiet and listen is unmatched. Wei Ying will be careful with the memories Lan Zhan gives him, he thinks. “My mother used to do it for me. When I was small. I sat on her lap and she braided my hair and we watched the trees sway outside the window.”
