Her habits are eccentric and her mother despairs of her ever making a good match, much to the frustration of her sisters, who must wait their turn.
Into Holby society comes Mrs McKinnie and her high spirited daughter Serena. They have lately removed from Brighton, where misfortune hounded her husband to his death. But what manner of misfortune, Serena cannot say. All too soon though, it will hound her, too.
