Ganyu's subtle derision doesn't help.“I… have the reports from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, as you requested yesterday,” Ganyu finally said, laying the papers on Keqing’s desk. True to her mild nature, her voice did not betray any judgment. But Keqing had seen it already—her surprise, the crack in her otherwise perfect mask of professionalism.
“Thank you, Ganyu,” Keqing grit out. The smile on her face felt stiff. The concerned look Ganyu was giving her suggested that it was, indeed, stiff.

Changes to her habits were rare when she worked like clockwork for so long. So long, in fact, that Ganyu did not register the discrepancy at first when it slipped into her routine.
Every morning since the new Yuheng’s induction into the Qixing, Ganyu woke slightly earlier than the crack of dawn. With hands loosely clasped together, Ganyu wordlessly bowed her head in reverence and kneeled for a silent prayer to Rex Lapis. She then paused for a second, worried if maybe she was asking for a little too much but continued anyway.
Peace and quiet. Safety and prosperity, for Liyue and Her people. Another productive day, for herself and the rest of the Qixing. Rex Lapis’ continued guidance. Sweet dreams. For her encounters with the Yuheng to be quick and painless.

Summary
In two thousand years, Ganyu has worked alongside hundreds of the Qixing's ranks, and none have displayed such brazen contempt for Rex Lapis as the new Yuheng, Keqing. Keqing's attitude infuriates her, and Rex Lapis' faith in her in spite of it is completely baffling. But because she trusts him more than anyone else, Ganyu does her best to understand Keqing and ends up getting more than she could ever have bargained for.
Alternately: Ganyu can't stand Keqing. Rex Lapis, in his infinite wisdom, plays matchmaker for his favorite servant and heretic.

"Now, in fairness, this wasn't the dumbest thing Keqing had done to impress Ganyu. No, the Birthday Incident™ still took the number one spot there. Keqing didn’t understand why, but something about the constant glancing towards Ganyu and the promises of becoming tentative friends was almost… astonishing to her. It almost felt childish. She was too delved into her work to ponder it further, but the slight squeezes in her chests never left.
“Would you mind getting me some eye drops?” she asked a passing servant. Keqing smiled sheepishly. “Staring at all of these reports are making my eyes hurt.”
“Are you alright?” Ganyu asked beside her, worry etched into her features.
Keqing waved off her worry.

Summary
Ganyu is one of the adepti of Celestia whose job is to assign humans their soulmates. She rarely makes mistakes, at least not any that can’t be easily corrected. Keqing is the victim of one such rare mistake. She arrives in Celestia at the end of her short life, soulmate-less.
But—as Ganyu soon finds out—Keqing doesn’t seem to care; she’s actually proud to be an anomaly of the system and is quick to brush off Ganyu’s offers of help even though Ganyu is duty-bound to routine check-ins. Keqing turns out to be frustrating and intriguing and oddly comforting all at once, and perhaps lonelier than she lets on. Ganyu can’t help but be drawn in.
