Communications Graphics Volunteer

Are you a digital artist interested in the OTW's work? The OTW Communications committee is looking for graphic designers to create digital art for our news posts and other official documents. Communications is the main information distribution team for the OTW. We manage the OTW News blog and related social media accounts, and we assist other teams in managing project-specific communication. If you would like to join the OTW and help bring fandom news to the public, click through to learn more about the role and apply to join as a Communications Volunteer.

Applications are due 12 February 2020

Translation Volunteer

If you enjoy working collaboratively, if you’re fluent in a language other than English, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help us reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you!

Translation volunteers help make the OTW and its projects accessible to a wider global audience. We work on translating content by the OTW and its projects from English to other languages, such as site pages, news posts, AO3 FAQs and AO3 Support emails. (However, we do not translate fanworks.)

We really need volunteers who speak Afrikaans, Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Croatian, Danish, Filipino, Finnish, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Japanese, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Marathi, Persian, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Thai, Ukrainian, Vietnamese and Welsh—but help with other languages would be much appreciated. If you’re interested in starting a team for a language we don’t have yet, you’re very welcome to!

(Please note that our Catalan, Czech, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Italian, Korean, Malay, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese-BR, Portuguese-PT, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swedish and Turkish teams are not accepting new members at this time.)

Applicants may be asked to translate and correct short text samples and will be invited to a chatroom interview as part of the selection process.

Are you interested in volunteering for the Organization for Transformative Works with the Abuse Committee, Fanhackers or AO3 Support?

We would like to thank everyone who responded to our previous call for Communications, Strategic Planning, and Volunteers & Recruitment staff!

Today, we're excited to announce the opening of applications for:

  • Abuse Committee Staff - closing 21 September 2016 UTC
  • Communications Committee - Fanhackers Staff - closing 21 September 2016 UTC
  • Support Committee Staff - closing 21 September 2016 UTC

We have included more information on each role below. Open roles and applications will always be available at the volunteering page. If you don't see a role that fits with your skills and interests now, keep an eye on the listings. We plan to put up new applications every few weeks, and we will also publicize new roles as they become available.

All applications generate a confirmation page and an auto-reply to your e-mail address. We encourage you to read the confirmation page and to whitelist volunteers -(at)- transformativeworks -(dot)- org in your e-mail client. If you do not receive the auto-reply within 24 hours, please check your spam filters and then contact us.

If you have questions regarding volunteering for the OTW, check out our Volunteering FAQ.

Abuse Committee Staff: The Abuse Committee is dedicated to helping users deal with the various situations that may arise. We also handle any complaints that come in about content uploaded to the Archive of Our Own. The team determines if complaints are about legitimate violations of the Terms of Service, and what to do about them if they are; our major goals are to adhere to the TOS, to make our reasoning and processes as clear and transparent as possible, and to keep every individual case completely confidential. We work closely with other AO3 related committees such as Support and Content.

We are seeking people who can keep in close contact, be patient in rephrasing explanations, make and document decisions, cooperate within and outside of their team, and ask for help when it's needed. Staffers need to be able to handle complex and sometimes-disturbing content, and must be able to commit a sufficient amount of time to the team on a regular basis.

Abuse staffers are required to spend at least five hours a week handling committee work, though it often tends to be more. Please be sure you can handle the workload before applying.

Applications are due 21 September 2016

Communications Committee - Fanhackers Staff: Communications staffers are responsible for the distribution of information internally to OTW personnel and externally to the general public, the media, fans, and other fannish organizations. Communications is also typically the first point of contact for someone interested in or wanting help from OTW.

Fanhackers is a blog for the discussion of fannish meta topics and fannish perspectives on fan and media studies. The position of Fanhackers staffer would be a good fit for someone with an interest in reading and sharing academic works about fans and fannish meta, and who is familiar with the work done by Transformative Works and Cultures.

Applications are due 21 September 2016

Support Committee Staff: The Support team is responsible for handling the feedback and requests for assistance we receive from users of the Archive. We answer users’ questions, help to resolve problems they’re experiencing, and pass on information to and from coders, testers, tag wranglers and other teams involved with the Archive.

Applications are due 21 September 2016

Tag Wrangling Volunteer

The Tag Wranglers are responsible for helping to keep the millions of tags on AO3 in some kind of order! Wranglers follow internal guidelines to choose the tags that appear in the filters and auto-complete, which link related works together. (This makes it easier to browse and search on the archive, whether that’s Steve/Tony with tentacles or g-rated Rose/Kanaya fluff.)

If you’re an experienced AO3 user who likes organizing, working in teams, or excuses to fact-check your favorite fandoms, you might enjoy tag wrangling! To join us, click through to the job description and application form.

Please note: due to (amazing!) interest in wrangling, we’re currently looking for wranglers for specific fandoms only. See the application for which fandoms are in need.

Applications closing after 50 applications or 18 May 2016 UTC

Legal Committee Staff Member

The Legal Committee is responsible for carrying out the OTW's legal advocacy mission and providing internal legal support and guidance to the OTW as an organization. We provide confidential legal advice to every part of the OTW organization, respond to fans' requests for general assistance and information, and create educational materials. We also file briefs in lawsuits and advise lawmakers about how to take fans’ needs and interests into account in creating and interpreting the law. And we're looking for a few new members!

We are particularly looking to expand our committee’s expertise in the fields of personnel/employment/HR law and nonprofit law. We’re also interested in finding people with expertise in the intellectual property laws of countries other than the U.S, and in adding to our group of people with expertise in U.S. copyright and trademark law. If this describes you – or even if it doesn’t, but you have legal experience and would be interested in joining the OTW’s Legal Committee, please click through to the application form.
