Communications Staffer: Chair Track Staffer

The Communications Committee is the central information distributing arm of the OTW, responsible for the distribution of information internally to OTW personnel and externally to the general public, the media, fans, and other fannish organizations. Communications is also typically the first point of contact for someone interested in or wanting help from OTW, and serves all of the organization's committees and projects. The position of Chair Track Staffer is designed for individuals with ample time to learn all aspects of Communications' activities, and who would like to work toward being considered for the role of chair.

Applications are due 26 May 2014 UTC

Translation Committee Staff Member

Translation Committee staff members coordinate a large volunteer pool responsible for the translation of OTW site pages, news posts, Archive FAQs, AO3 Support tickets, and any inquiry that reaches an OTW committee or workgroup in languages they can’t translate themselves.

While volunteers do the actual text translation and editing, staff helps them by keeping track of priorities, deadlines and pending tasks; assigning work; talking and working with other committees to arrange tools for the volunteers; writing training and procedures documentation; and many other tasks involved in managing a wide, diverse and very active volunteer pool.

If you enjoy teamwork, if you like organizing, writing documentation and working with people, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help us reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you!

Abuse Committee Staff
The Abuse Committee is dedicated to helping users deal with the various situations that may arise. We also handle any complaints that come in about content uploaded to the Archive of Our Own. The team determines if complaints are about legitimate violations of the Terms of Service, and what to do about them if they are; our major goals are to adhere to the TOS, to make our reasoning and processes as clear and transparent as possible, and to keep every individual case completely confidential. We work closely with other AO3 related committees such as Support and Content.

Applications are due 21 April 2014 UTC

Legal Committee Staff
The Legal Committee is responsible for carrying out the OTW's legal advocacy mission and providing internal legal support and guidance to the OTW as an organization. We provide confidential legal advice to every part of the OTW organization, respond to fans' requests for general assistance and information, and create educational materials. We also file briefs in lawsuits and advise lawmakers about how to take fans’ needs and interests into account in creating and interpreting the law. And we're looking for a few new members!

We are particularly looking to expand our committee’s expertise in the fields of personnel/employment/HR law and nonprofit law. We’re also interested in finding people with expertise in the intellectual property laws of countries other than the U.S, and in adding to our group of people with expertise in U.S. copyright and trademark law. If this describes you – or even if it doesn’t, but you have legal experience and would be interested in joining the OTW’s Legal Committee, please click through to the application form.

Applications are due 21 April 2014 UTC

Volunteers & Recruiting Staff
The OTW is an entirely volunteer-run organization, and Volunteers & Recruiting looks after those volunteers! As the human resources committee, our job is to make sure that everyone has the tools, training and assistance they need to perform their best. If you have strong written communication skills, and an interest in or knowledge of personnel and/or project management, click through for details.

Applications are due 21 April 2014 UTC

We would like to thank everyone who responded to our previous call for Translation Committee Staff, Development & Membership Committee Staff and Communications AD&T Liaisons.

Today, we're excited to announce the opening of applications for:

  • Support Committee Staff - Applications accepted until 24 February 2014
  • Translator Volunteers - Applications accepted until 24 February 2014
  • Communications Graphics Volunteers - Applications accepted until 24 February 2014

We have included more information on each role below. Open roles and applications will always be available at the volunteering page. If you don't see a role that fits with your skills and interests now, keep an eye on the listings.

All applications generate a confirmation page and an auto-reply to your e-mail address. We encourage you to read the confirmation page and to whitelist volunteers -(at)- transformativeworks -(dot)- org in your e-mail client. If you do not receive the auto-reply within 24 hours, please check your spam filters and then contact us.

If you have questions regarding volunteering for the OTW, check out our Volunteering FAQ.

Support Committee Staff The Support Committee handles communication between users and the various teams involved with the Archive of Our Own. We receive questions and ideas about all aspects of the Archive from users. The Support team helps by answering questions about using the Archive, diagnosing issues, documenting bugs for the coders to address, getting the most out of features like skins or challenges, passing on questions about tags to the wranglers, documenting requests for new or improved features, or getting answers about general policy.
Applications are due 24 February 2014

Translator Volunteers Translators and translation betas help make the OTW and its projects accessible to a wider international audience. We work on translating all sorts of content throughout the OTW and its projects: site pages, news posts, Archive FAQs, AO3 Support tickets, and any inquiry that reaches a committee or volunteer group in languages they can’t translate themselves. Most of our work consists of translations from English to another language, though we also need to do the reverse in some occasions.

If you are fluent in one language (or more!) other than English, if you enjoy working collaboratively, if you like having flexible deadlines that you set yourself, if you’re passionate about the OTW and its projects, and want to help it reach more fans all around the world, working with Translation might be for you! We have a pressing need for volunteers who speak Dutch, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish and Turkish — but any and all help with other languages would be much appreciated!
Applications are due 24 February 2014

Communications Graphics Volunteers
Communications has primary responsibility for internal and external communication for the OTW. We manage the OTW blog and social media outlets and assist other teams in managing project-specific communication. We’re currently looking for someone to create graphics to accompany our news posts and for special events. Please see our News page for examples. If you have experience with graphic design or fanart, click through to learn more about the role and apply to join as a Communications Volunteer. Applications are due 24 February 2014.

Development & Membership Committee Staffer
The Development & Membership committee (DevMem) coordinates the OTW's fundraising and membership-building activities. If you have skills and interests in fundraising, writing or designing promotional content, or customer service, consider applying to join our staff.

Translation Committee Staffer
The Translation Committee coordinates localization efforts across the OTW: the translation of site pages, news posts, Archive FAQs, AO3 Support tickets, and any inquiry that reaches a committee or volunteer group in languages they can’t translate themselves. While volunteers do the actual text translation and editing, staff helps them by keeping track of priorities, deadlines and pending tasks; assigning work; talking and working with other committees to arrange tools for the volunteers; uploading translated documents; writing training and procedures documentation; and many other tasks involved in managing a wide, diverse and very active volunteer pool.

If you are interested in the behind-the-scenes development of an open-source project, and would like to help us create and share news about the AO3, this is the position for you!
Applications will be accepted until the role is filled.

Today, we're excited to announce the opening of applications for:
  • Abuse Committee Staff
  • Wiki Committee Staff
  • Wiki Committee Design Specialist
  • Translation volunteers

We have included more information on each role below. Open roles and applications will always be available at the volunteering page. If you don't see a role that fits with your skills and interests now, keep an eye on the listings. We plan to put up new applications every few weeks, and we will also publicize new roles as they become available.

If you have questions regarding volunteering for the OTW, check out our Volunteering FAQ. Abuse Committee Staff
The Abuse Committee is dedicated to helping users deal with the various situations that may arise. We also handle any complaints that come in about content uploaded to the Archive of Our Own. We work closely with other AO3 related committees such as Support and Content.

We are seeking people who can keep in close contact, be patient in rephrasing explanations, translate from fan-speak to English, make and document decisions, cooperate within and outside of their team, and ask for help when it's needed. Staffers need to be able to handle complex and sometimes-disturbing content, and must be able to commit a sufficient amount of time to the team on a regular basis.

Applications are due 4th of November 2013.

Wiki Committee Staff
The Wiki Committee supervises Fanlore: we provide direction, write policies and help documents, promote the wiki, organise and support Gardeners, communicate with users, and keep the site running. We handle requests for support and complaints from users and do our best to help the Fanlore community grow.

If you like Fanlore and are interested in helping the site improve, you could consider joining the Wiki committee.

Applications are due 4th of November 2013.

Wiki Committee Design Specialist
The current design and skin for the fannish wiki Fanlore is partly a byproduct of other processes and considerations and we'd like to improve it. Our main concerns are usability and accessibility, but ideally it should be pretty, too. If you have experience with front-end web development and Web design and are interested in Fanlore, we'd be happy to have your help with this project.

Applications are due 4th of November 2013.
